Updating a child’s bedroom doesn’t have to mean repainting walls or buying all new furniture. Sometimes the smallest additions can completely transform the space. That switch from having a 4 year old to suddenly approaching 7 on his next birthday happened SO quickly! And in the meantime we didn’t have any time to adjust in his bedroom.
When my son wanted his room to feel more “grown up”, we made a few simple upgrades that instantly changed the vibe of the room. It’s such a middle age. You don’t want it to be too grown up as he’s still so young, but we wanted to remove anything baby-ish so that he can call the room his own.
These small changes made the difference and were inexpensive, as well as easy to do… for now! I can image the DIYs will come soon.

Create a Dedicated Gaming Zone
One of the quickest ways to make a child’s bedroom feel more exciting is by creating a small gaming setup. A good gaming chair instantly makes the space feel more grown up and comfortable, especially if your child likes spending time playing games or using their computer. The ergonomic design also means better support for their back, which is helpful if they’re sitting for longer periods. Even just swapping out a regular desk chair for a proper gaming chair can completely change the look of the room and give the whole area a more modern, fun feel.
This chair is the very popular X Rocker chair. The reason my son chose it is because it has colourful lights that appear when switched on. You can also connect it with your gaming device as the speakers are embedded in the chair… on the headrest!! Cool huh! I think it’s a chair that will be used for a very long time.
Upgrade the Walls with Posters or Artwork
Such an easy way to update the room to reflect your child’s interests, whether that’s gaming, space, sports, or their favourite films.
A small gallery wall can make the room feel more personal and creative, and it’s also an easy update that doesn’t require any big decorating changes. It’s a simple way to give the room character while letting your child express their personality through the things they love.

Add a Galaxy Projector Light

A galaxy projector light is one of those small additions that can make a bedroom feel completely magical at night.
When the lights go down, the projector fills the ceiling with stars and colourful galaxy effects. It’s just wonderful at night!! Creating a relaxing atmosphere that feels a bit like sleeping under the night sky. It’s perfect for children who love space, but it also works as a calming night light that helps wind things down before bedtime.
It’s a fun feature that turns an ordinary bedroom into something much more imaginative and cosy.

This personalised Roblox light was a hit too. He received it as a gift from his aunty and I think it’s just a lovely touch for his room.
Encourage Curiosity with a Telescope
Adding a telescope to the room is a brilliant way to encourage curiosity and a love of learning. Even a beginner telescope can open up a whole new world for children who are fascinated by space and the night sky. It also doubles as a really cool feature in a bedroom, especially if the room has a bit of a space theme. Having a telescope nearby can spark interest in astronomy and make those clear nights extra exciting when there’s something new to look at in the sky.

Mini Fridge
Now what 6 YO boy wouldn’t want a mini fridge in their room! Endless supplies of refreshments?! YES, PLEASE!
When he asked us for one we thought it was a little funny at first. But it makes him feel like a big boy and it really wasn’t expensive! It’s a fun thing to have (not to mention we do less drink runs to the kitchen now as a result!)
Again, it had to be colourful, so we went for this one on Amazon
Upgrading your child’s room doesn’t have to be expensive! Just a few small changes can improve the room quite a lot from toddler stage to bigger kid stage!
