How to Make Hummus

How to Make Hummus

(Better Than Store-Bought!)

There’s something so satisfying about making your own hummus from scratch. It’s creamy, fresh, and you can adjust it exactly how you like it — extra garlicky, extra lemony, or ultra-smooth and fluffy and you can make them in big batched! Once you try homemade hummus, it’s very hard to go back to the tub version.

This recipe is simple, reliable, and incredibly creamy.

What Is Hummus?

Hummus is a Middle Eastern dip made primarily from chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil. It’s blended until smooth and served as a dip, spread, or side dish.

It’s naturally vegetarian, gluten-free, and packed with plant-based protein.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Made with simple pantry ingredients

  • Ready in 10 minutes

  • Customisable flavour

  • Perfect for meal prep

  • Cheaper than store-bought

What Does It Taste Like?

Classic hummus is nutty from tahini, bright from lemon, slightly garlicky, and rich from olive oil. It’s smooth, savoury, and incredibly scoopable.

Ingredients

  • 1 (400g / 15 oz) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

  • ¼ cup tahini (optional)

  • 2–3 tbsp fresh lemon juice (about 1 lemon)

  • 1 small garlic clove (or ½ for milder flavour)

  • 2 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for serving)

  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)

  • 2–4 tbsp cold water (for blending)

Optional toppings:

  • Paprika

  • Olive oil drizzle

  • Fresh parsley

  • Toasted pine nuts

Tools You’ll Need

  • Food processor or high-speed blender

  • Measuring spoons

  • Spatula

  • Small serving bowl

How to Make Hummus

Step 1: Blend the Base

Add tahini and lemon juice to your food processor first. Blend for 30–60 seconds until creamy and slightly whipped. This helps make the hummus extra smooth.

Step 2: Add Garlic & Chickpeas

Add garlic, chickpeas, olive oil, and salt. Blend until smooth.

Step 3: Adjust Texture

While blending, add cold water 1 tablespoon at a time until the hummus becomes light and fluffy.

Step 4: Taste & Adjust

Add more lemon, salt, or garlic to taste.

Step 5: Serve

Spread into a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and sprinkle with paprika or herbs.

How to Make Hummus Extra Creamy (Pro Tip)

For ultra-smooth hummus:

  • Remove the skins from the chickpeas (optional but effective)

  • Blend tahini and lemon first before adding chickpeas

  • Use cold water while blending

  • Blend longer than you think you need to

Flavour Variations

  • Roasted Red Pepper Hummus

  • Spicy Chili Hummus

  • Garlic Lovers Hummus

  • Avocado Hummus

  • Beetroot Hummus

How to Serve Hummus

  • With warm pita bread

  • With carrot, cucumber, and pepper sticks

  • As a sandwich spread

  • In wraps or bowls

  • On toast with eggs

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Add a thin layer of olive oil on top to keep it fresh.
